Jeannie and Wally looked for a wig or skull cap that looked real so I would look like I was balding with just a fringe of hair. It is actually mentioned in the play. So no luck on a wig. So I am going to do it… Shave My Head. For this weekends show (Saturday, March 22nd and Sunday, March 23rd), I will shave most of my head except for the “fringe”. Then for the next 5 weekends I will be completely bald and hair.

This also means that for the Atlanta Unifieds, I will not look like my headshots, but a bald guy with a beard.

I (and a few others) received an email earlier in the week from Jeannie with the play details and character breakdowns. What I gathered (and confirmed) was that Jeannie wanted to see me audition. I know that this did not guarantee me a role, just that she wanted to see me/us audition. So I did.

There was a single adult male role. J. A. HARRISON is a 45ish, blustery irate neighbor, who tends to bully and browbeat everyone. Not that the rest of the male role are children, but I don’t think I can do an 18 year old. So J. A. HARRISON or bust.

Jeannie had me read a single scene with ANNE where J. A. HARRISON rants about a cow who is into his oats. It was a fun scene.

Candy Cain Spahr was supposed to have directed the play, but a new job is taking her away. I was in Heidi with Candy, so it would have been good to work with her again. I take that back, she will be Co-Directing while she is in town, but that is only for a few weeks.

I was mentioning to Candy about understanding the desire to do larger roles. I have done a lot of minor roles and the only lead role I have had was in A Christmas Story this past December. I have scene actors who will refuse to do a role because it is small. My thought is that at least I am doing something that I love to do. Yes I would like to be the lead, but at least with any role, I am on stage even if its just for part of a play.

I know that I am not guaranteed a part in Anne of Avonlea, but I was the only adult male who auditioned last night. There are more auditions on Saturday with callbacks, if necessary, on Saturday afternoon.

A man and woman meet by chance at a romantic inn over dinner. Although both are married to others, they find themselves in the same bed the next morning questioning how this could have happened. They agree to meet on the same weekend each year. Each of them always appears on schedule, but as time goes on each has some personal crisis that the other helps them through, often without both of them understanding what is going on. Twenty five years of manners, morals and attitudes are mirrored during these encounters as we follow this love affair between George and Doris, who rendezvous once a year.

Directed by: Adriana Warner

When: December 4 (Tuesday) and December 5 (Wednesday) from 7-9 PM. No appointment necessary.

Union Status: Non-equity/Non Paying

Casting: one man, one woman

Characters: must be able to play a 25 year age range for the six vignettes

George – begins as an uptight, neurotic accountant, becomes stuffy and rich, gives it all up when he goes into analysis and joins encounter groups, and becomes a latter-day hippie before returning to the establishment.

Doris – matures from an awkward girl to a restless housewife, a college returnee, an over-age flower child, a career woman and finally a settled matron.

Audition requirements: Cold readings from the script

Our first read through is next Wednesday. For me that will be after rehearsal for Heidi.

I had been not acting to build a business and it was pure torture not to act. I have had the best time and have been so excited to be back on stage. Now to have two plays back to back is just, well, I am speechless.

Auditioned for Breaking Legs on Tuesday night and got a part in Heidi. Just before rehearsal, I asked Jeannie Hinds if they might need me for the second night of auditions just in case they might need an extra voice. Jeannie said yes.

So after rehearsal, I went to the auditions again. You know they more they see you, hopefully gives you a better chance at a part. This give you an opportunity to improve upon what you did the night before.

It also gave the opportunity to see all the potentials and how you might size up against the competitions.

At the end of the night, Jeannie – who is directing Breaking Legs – said there would be no call backs and that she would let us know by Friday if we got a part. This was a change from Wednesday night where there might have been callbacks on Thursday with notice by Monday.

Chances are good.

It was very interesting, instructive and, I suppose, fun doing light and sound for the 2006 run of A Christmas Carol at Kudzu Playhouse.

There were lots and sound and light changes. And now for the combinations: Simultaneous light and sound, simultaneous sound with actor (each ghost had a sound for pointing), simultaneous light with actor actions, and several of the more difficult light and sound followed immediate by another sound (I had two Mini disk players), and a few fade sound, queue and play another sound.

As long as I took my time and paid attention I had no problem, but with 120+ changes I never had a perfect night. My hope was to be as transparent to the audience as possible. As long as the audience did not notice, everything was cool. For the most part I was.

On the final night (of any play), Wally and Jeannie hand out a package with a letter, cast photo, VIP passes, etc. In the letter to the Cast and Crew of A Christmas Carol, there was high praise for me: A big thanks goes to Jay for such a great job as our tech. He came in as a novice and finished as a true professional.

Jeannie, what are you looking for in the supporting male actor. I would think that I am too young looking.
Thanks
Jay

For the couple, it says the man is middle aged. What ever that means, but you know a lot depends on who the female is. And for all the other men the age is very broad. I hope to see you.

jeannie

So I went to the audition on the second night. There were only 7 of us on the second night (5 female and 2 male) and the other male read the night before. Very small turn out the second night compared to my last audition at Kudzu where about 100 people auditioned over two nights.

Anyway, there are 4 parts in this play, the two main characters and 1 female and 1 male who both play multiple roles. The roles all reference older life within the play. Even though I could help in the reading and interaction, I don’t believe I will get a part.

And, well, tonight is callbacks and I have not received a call. Plays are very sparse this year. I might have to drive to Marietta.
