Sylvia at Big Top – Update

It appears that my thoughts were correct about this audition. There were two people, including me, who auditioned for GREG. I don’t interpret this as my being bad, but that I was not what he was looking for. Putting a cast together that is going to work together well is not easy when so few show up for the audition. I knew that night, that Neil as TOM and I as GREG were not a good fit. Our interpretations of each character were incompatible. I hope it works out for the cast.

Audition #10 – Sylvia at Big Top Theatre

There was only one guy who auditioned on Sunday. And by phone calls, the director was only able to get two more guys to audition. Out of three guys, the director has to fill two positions. That has to be tough. I know it sounds easy: pick two, toss the third. But it is not easy building a solid, compatible cast out of so few people. None of the guys may be suitable and then what do you do.

I auditioned for the role of GREG. GREG finds SYLVIA in the park and brings here home. The audition went well enough from my perspective. But do I want to land a role by default? Well, I was given a role in The Sunshine Boys. But it was a very very small role and the director could have said no. The director of Sylvia could do the same, call for more auditions or cancel the play all together.

But what am I worried about here. That I might be in a bad production? Am I being arrogant? Creative Differences with the director? Obviously I have some reservations, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe I am worried from a directorial perspective.

From what little I know about Sylvia, it is a cute play, very funny. I would like to read the script even if I do not get a part.

Big Top Theatre will hold non-equity auditions for Sylvia, by A.R. Gurney Sunday April. 10 at 7:30. Call backs will be Monday April. 11 at 7:30pm.

Directed by David Kronawitter. Audition appointments will be in 10 minute blocks. Casting 2 women mid 40′s to mid 50′s, 1 woman mid-20′s to mid 30′s, 1 man mid 40′s to mid 50′s and 1 man mid 30′s to mid 40′s. (This actor will double as Tom and the genderly ambiguous psychiatrist Leslie)

Please be as familiar as possible with the script, because auditions will consist of cold readings from it. Please bring headshot and resume if available. Show runs May 27 through June 12. Big Top Theatre is holding non-equity auditions for
Neil Simon’s Fools
on Sunday, November 28 at 4 pm; and Monday, November 29 at 7 pm.

Casting 7 men and 3 women. Prepare a 1.5 minute comedic monologue and expect cold readings from the script. Headshot and resume preferred but not required.

Show runs weekends, Jan. 14 – Feb, 12. No pay offered.
Directed by David Kronawitter. Auditions will be held at Big Top Theatre, 2060 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 300, Marietta
